Your Questions About Bermuda Grass Seed

William asks…

Did I ruin my Bermuda Grass lawn by letting it grow too long?

I started my lawn with Bermuda grass seeds and everything was growing great. I know I was supposed to let it grow to 4 inches first and then mow down to 2 inches. I neglected it and now it is over 8 inches! I cut it down to 2 inches and now it is very spiky. The grass stem is very hard and brown and it isn't soft and green anymore like it was. I am assuming it was very bad to let it grow this long. My question is if I ruined my bermuda grass? Is it ever going to get soft and green like it was and how can I get it back to normal? I cut 1/4th of the lawn down to 2 inches. I looked closely and a lot of the grass isn't even the blades anymore, it's just a brown stick (the stem of the grass) I wonder if it will turn green and have fresh blades growing? I do water it every day pretty well so it gets plenty of water but it still doesn't seem like its getting soft and full like it was :-/ I don't know if I explained it clearly, but the hard brown stems are not dead grass, they are at the bottom of very healthy grass. It's just since I let it grow too long, the base of the grass stem is becoming that of like a tree trunk. grass doesn't get like this usually because it is usually mowed on a regular basis, but since I let it grow too long it decided to strengthen the stem by turning it into "tree trunk" like . It doesn't seem like blades are growing out of it anymore because letting it grow too long may have made it unable to grow blades from the base anymore. But even if it does, it doesn't look like it would be dense grass anymore.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

I don't think so, it may just need a good soaking. Although Bermuda is tolerant to heat and drought, you may want to keep watering it once a week depending on where you live, especially since it newly grown grass. I'm in TX, so I do a good soaking once a week in order for it to stay green. Since it's newly seeded grass, I would lay off the fertilizer until it's more established…I would check with your local nursery just to make sure….it may burn it and make things worse. I would wait until next spring and apply something like Scotts Halts…..it willl keep it green and prevent weeds. Hope this helps…good luck.

Donna asks…

Is it too late to plant bermuda seed in N. Central TX?

Is it too late to plate bermuda seed in N. Central TX? I am wanting to get my entire yard to have good bermuda grass but I don't know if I should wait until the beginning of summer or plant seeds now.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

No

Mark asks…

grass seed?

How long after plantng bermuda grass should you wait to start walking and/or letting your dogs walk on it.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

U shouldn't walk on it until there is full sprouting…. I just planted grass in my own backyard. And that's what home depot told me.

Sharon asks…

When is the best time to water your grass?

Im trying to grow grass on plain dirt….Im using seedbermuda, and rye trying to build a base….should I use shoots or st. augustine?

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Between 12pm and 2am. While the sun is down and the night is cool to allow saturation and reduced lawn burning. You can get an inexpensive water timer that screws onto your hose bib at Wal-Mart.

Your Questions About Bermuda Grass Seed

Betty asks…

if i put bermuda grass seeds on top of another grass i dont want how long would it take the bermuda grass to?

grow and kill the other grass…..

lawngrassseed.net answers:

That won't work at all unless the other grass is VERY sparse. Kill what you don't want first. Wait a couple of weeks. Then work your dirt. Get it level, get some small furrows (I use a rake), then throw and cover your seed. Keep it moist, but not wet. Don't forget, Bermuda is a rhizome grass.

William asks…

How can I keep Zoysia Grass or Bermuda Grass from spreading?

I'm thinking of planting zoysia or Bermuda by seed late spring. I have one neighbor on one side and want to keep it from spreading in to their yard.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

The only answer is. You can't.

Charles asks…

Bermuda Seed Watering?

We bought a new house, had builder seed Bermuda grass. They did soil tests 3 weeks before laying the seed, and double seeded. It looks like the seeds were just sitting on top of the soil, not buried 1/4" below. I've watered as much as I can, but I dont think its enough. To date its been 11 days, and I havent seen as many grass blades as expected. Most of them look like weeds anyway, I cant tell. Should I be worried? The soil is a clay/sand mixture, and looks dry 10 mins after watering. When can I expect to see grass? Will it grow even though I cant water it 1" a day?

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Keep it moist because if it dries, it dies. Once the ambient temperature is 70 degree's for 30 day's, it will grow. In Dallas, that is usually May 31st. Do not fertilize until after the 3rd mowing, no weed control of any kind this summer. Keep turf at 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches tall. Now go drink a beer and relax.

Sandra asks…

how do I plant the seed mix for my sulcata tortoise?

I purchased some grassland graze mix through turtlecafe.com ( I highly recommend NOT ordering from them) Well after over 2 weeks I finally recieved my order and there is no instructions. I have a 1/2 lb bag of mixed weeds and a small bag of bermuda grass seed. I am sure I can look up how to plant the grass, but how do I plant the mixed weed seeds?? If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Turtle Cafe used to be a great place to order seeds, cactus pads and such but since they've changed owners — I'll never order from them again. This is what I do…fill a container with organic soil, spread the seeds, moisten with water and cover the container and set in the sun. This will cause them to germinate in 3-10 days. Once they start sprouting you can remove the cover and allow them to grow. If you want seeds that will grow and expect quality… Go to Carolina Pet Supply. The owners raise turtles and tortoises and offer quality products at a reasonable price.

Your Questions About Bermuda Grass Seed

Mark asks…

If it frosts after I spread grass seed will the seed still grow?

I am spreading bermuda seed. It si supposed to hit 30 degrees F this weekend but other than that the weather will be between 40 and 70.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Your seed will be fine as long as it doesnt germinate only when it germinates and the plants are small is when frost will effect it . If its just seed on the ground and it freezes the freeze will not effect the seed because seed has not germinated yet, i dont know what part of the country you are in, but in texas near houston if the night time temps are still below 70 degrees we do not seed with bermuda grass yet, we still seed with ryegrass or fescue, because we have found that a lot of bermuda will not germinate unill the night time temps reach 70 degrees and stays in that temperature range at night and in the fall we change to ryegrass and fescue when nighttime temps stay below 70 degrees

Mandy asks…

Growing Bermuda grass seeds?

My husband planted some bermuda grass seeds where it is bare from the neighbor's trees shading some of our yard too much. Our st. augustine just kept getting thinner and thinner now it's bare. Will this bermuda (once it starts growing) take over our st. augustine in the rest of the yard? Or will it stay pretty much in those areas? Bc I don't want anything to take over my grass.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Bermuda will die in the shade, needs a good 7 or 8 hrs. Of direct sunshine to thrive. The more sun the better. Bout the only thing that does good in shade is rye or some kind of fescue but it does not spread. A seed will shoot up one sprout and thats it so if you seed it use a lot of seed and cover it with a light cover of top soil

Linda asks…

when is the best time to seed berumda grass?

when is the best time to seed bermuda grass

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Bermudagrass is a warm season grass so the soil must be warming up nicely. Without knowing where you are, it's hard to say. If the pumpkins, okra and such are going into the garden, then you are close to seeding time. Wait a bit more to make certain the soil is truly warm.

Your Questions About Lawn Grass Seeders

Daniel asks…

I am looking for grass seed to supplement a sodded lawn that is 2 years old. The soil is sandy and full sun.?

Much of the lawn is growing well. Parts of the lawn are spotty and look bad. I plan to use a slit seeder to apply the grass seed. I am hoping for a hearty seed that can handle the soil type and the full sun. Lawn is located in upper midwest.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

You would need a good mixed seed of 3 or 4 great varieties. Check with a professional landscape supply company or a local (Not Big Box) Nursery. Also, if you know the name of the sod company that installed the sod, you might want to give them a call. They sometimes sell thier seed which was used to grow the sod. There are so many varieties of Fescue, Rye and Bluegrass out there, you might want to attempt to match the ones you already have. If you are looking for the best seed for your area, contact your local Ag Extension agent, or the nearest university turfgrass school.

Mandy asks…

I live in NC and there is a drout. I was encouraged to use a slit seeder for lawn.?

These are spendy to rent. Is it worth it? We have a very thin yard and some bare spots and want to grow some grass so that weeds don't take over.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

I'd not bother right now. If you're in drought then you'll be under water restictions and won't be able to water the grass as needed to keep it alive and growing. Would be a waste of money. You could do some patch seeding to fill in the bare spots. Just spread it by hand.

Sandra asks…

Do most people who live in small towns re-seed their lawns every year?

Our friend insisted on loaning us his lawn seeder 'because we needed it'. Our grass looks fine to me, but until recently, I have been a 'farm only' dweller. (I know, country bumkin all over me!) If I were to re-do the lawn, I have checked into this 'zoyzia' golf course grass that would cost only slightly more than the cost of grass seed. Your opinion please! Thank you!

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Hmmm i have never reseeded, heck it enough keeping it cut…I give two thumbs up to the person who created the riding lawn mower…Its my favorite piece of equipment on this ranch…lol

Linda asks…

New lawn has turned yellow! Help!?

Last summer I killed my lawn by using the wrong weed killer on it. I used weed and grass killer, oops! An $800.00 mistake. I used a sod cutter and allot of elbow grease to remove the old lawn. I had 3 yards of new soil brought in which was spread out on the lawn and rolled. Then I brought in a hydro-seeder to shoot the new lawn. Perfect. A few weeks later we had the best looking lawn in the block. Now, over the winter, my beautiful lawn has turned straw yellow. I have not been able to get out and put anything on it all winter because of foot surgery. Now that I am getting back on my feet I want to save the lawn if possible. I am not sure if I should just wait and watch to see if it comes back around or if I should spread new seed and fertilizer, or if more drastic measures need be taken. The lawn has been watered consistently every other day for about 10 minutes per setting. I live in N. California so our climate is pretty temperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

lawngrassseed.net answers:

I live in So. Central FL, and grass will brown, even in 70 degree Winters, most especially though I note you didn't specify the Species. I suspect you should bite the bullet for now, and live with it. The chemicals you used leached away long ago anyway. Scotts Turf Builder is a valid product, but weeds are a fact of life, not only in the fact that THEY are the indiginous species, but evolve much like Roaches, have far more substantial root systems than grasses, and will always be the invader. Certainly I want to assume, that grass species in your area, are sold, relative to your ZONE, but some people LIKE Bermuda, or other species of shallow root types. Aside: I have to chuckle sometimes here, that St. Augustine is widely popular, primarily because it spreads, as opposed to single root stock which has to seed in order to spread, yet in the North, the similar species is called Crabgrass, and is the plague for them. :) One thing you should do, though perhaps not until late March, is THATCH the lawn, reducing the dead, allowing aireation, and water/nutrients to actually leach to the root systems. I'd even take a patch to your local AGRI center and test the soil and lawn for parasites, acidity, etc. Steven Wolf just my two "sense"

Your Questions About Lawn Grass Seeding Rates

It takes 60 oz of grass seed to seed 2000 ft^2 of lawn. at this rate, how much would be needed to seed 5000 ft^2 of lawn?

lawngrassseed.net answers:

This is a ratio problem: 60 is to 2000 as x is to 5000 60/2000 = x/5000 => (5000/2000)*60 = x = 150oz

Mark asks…

It take 50oz of grass seed to seed 4000ft square of lawn. At this rate, how much would be needed for 9600ft sq?

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Given 50oz grass/4000 ft square of lawn Problem: How much would be needed for 9600ft sq? Solution: 4000ft x 2 = 8000ft or 50oz x 2 = 100oz 9600ft – 8000ft = 1600ft 1600ft / 4000ft = .4 or 40% 50oz x 40% = 20 100oz + 20oz = 120oz Answer: 9600ft = 120oz

Joseph asks…

Will the patches of grass I reseeded ever match the rest of the lawn?

A few months ago I planted grass seeds to cover some bald patches on my lawn where I had to dig out some bad weeds. It has taken beautifully, too well actually! So, I have some patches of lush, dark green grass that grows at twice the rate of the rest of the grass and the old bits that are a bit scrubby! Will it ever blend in?

lawngrassseed.net answers:

I had this problem after I managed to kill a big patch of lawn through weed killer that drifted :( The re-seeded bit was vivid green, it irritated me as much as it did when it was dead! Have to say my lawn is utterly stuffed with clover, self heal and all sorts of weird and wonderful, so now when I have to take out a dandelion or something that leaves a bare patch, I just let nature take it's course and let the clover colonise it etc. I actually prefer the clover to grass as it stays green and soft underfoot. I realise that's not exactly orthodox though! I've been in my garden all day today – factor 50 and I'm still burnt, but it looks half decent for once!(The garden not my sunburn)

i would like to know some basic lawn care machinery and how Much they would cost?

such as an edger, plug aerator, stuff in that category and how much they would cost

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Basic lawn care equipment usually consists of a mower, blower and a string trimmer. Few gardeners use an edger any more and very rarely do you need a plug aerator. For any of these items go to a store like Home Depot and a couple of lawn mower shops and price the items your really need. Are you a home owner or a kid that is just trying to earn a few bucks for the summer? Either way decide what you really need and what your budget is.

Lizzie asks…

What type of riding lawnmower do I need (details below) ?

We have about 3/4 of an acre of cleared land that is flat and patchy. Besides mowing, we would like to use the mower to reseed our lawn. We would like to use a pull aerator and also for other small hauling jobs on our land. As far as HP, deck size, motor, brand, etc? Any thoughts will be appreciated greatly. :D

lawngrassseed.net answers:

If all you were doing is cutting the grass a 6 hp would do the job. And anything larger will just cut it faster.. As for pulling things you will need a heavy tractor or it will just spin a wheel and not go anywhere. Maybe look at the plow aerator thing you are going to pull and see if it will tell you the power you need to pull it. That sounds like trouble to me for a Little mower. Sounds like you need the biggest riding mower made like a 25 hp.

Charles asks…

I have a problem with small holes in my lawn?

There are too many to count they are all approximately the size of a 2p piece, I'm a bit squeamish, so couldn't face pocking a stick into the hole in case I disturbed the inhabitant – if there is one!! However, they are based at either side of my garden and scattered about but resemble the mark of and aerator (I have not aerated the lawn), they are clean holes with no earth surrounding as you would expect with a burrowing creature. I am at a complete loss as to what these holes are, does anyone have any idea? I don't live in the country or near a stream! Please help.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

I had the identical problem just last week: a series of neat holes, coin size. Plus a round pattern of smaller holes, in several locations. I suspected yetis. One morning I looked out and saw – crows, pecking for grubs. The pattern of holes happened because the crows stood in one place and pecked in a half circle. If it's not birds, it's probably yetis. But don't worry – they vanish at the first sight of a camera :)

lawngrassseed.net answers:

Planting grass seeds is more than just spreading the seeds. The soil environment has to be right for the seeds to germinate properly and develop strong/deep roots. See: Planting Grass Seed: Step-by-Step Instructions: http://www.tigerfdn.com/planting-grass-seed-step-by-step-instructions-part-1 1 – Remove old lawn 2 – Turn the soil 3 – Check soil for correct pH level 4 – Remove roots & lawn debris 5 – Mix sand and compost into soil 6 – Correct oil pH balance using garden lime or sulfur (depending on pH level) 7 – Plant the grass seeds 8 – Rake seeds into soil 9 – Maintain proper watering schedule

From TEXAS – seeding Bermuda Grass – tips/advice please?

Hi, I'm thinking of spreading my front yard with bermuda grass seeds next week. Is it too late to do so at this time of the year? will it be too warm/hot to do so? Another question is, will I need to re-seed every year? or how often do I need to re-seed? Thanks so much in advance for your reply.

What was the directions for making organic lawn fertilizer that they had on This Old House?

It was something like ground up fish juice and I forget what all and they put it in a rain barrel with a pond aerator attached and used something else as a way to pump it out and spray it over the lawn after it set a few days. How do you get rid of moles? they have tunnels over my entire yard. would a pull-behind lawn aerator go deep enough to spike a mole? Agri-Fab 40-Inch Tow-Behind Spike Lawn Aerator #45-0346

lawngrassseed.net answers:

No unfortunately. You need to get rid of the grubs that are in your lawn. Moles feed off of the grubs. I suggest using some bug/grub killer follow the instructions. An aerotor will just put the nitrites in your lawn.

Has anybody used liquid lawn aeration?

About 2 months ago I laid a new sod yard. I tilled the entire yard about 6-8 inches deep to loosen the soil to give the new sod roots a good start. Well, the yard isn't doing so good even after continued watering. I called in a lawn care company and they have treated the lawn with fertilizers and premergers (for the weeds growing between the sod). They recommend lawn aeration and overseeding this fall which is what I plan to do. I have found a few companies that offer a liquid aeration that is supposed to be better that traditional methods such as spike or core aeration. Has anyone had any experience with this type of aeration? Aerify! and LazyMan™ Liquid Soil Aerator are two of the companies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

lawngrassseed.net answers:

It sounds kind of snake oily to me, but if you tilled the soil two months ago I question the need for aeration to begin with unless you have been holding marching band practice in your yard.
